Sewing New Pillow Slips

We're frugal people.  Most of our furniture is thrifted or hand-me-downs.  In fact, I'm pretty much against paying full price for furniture, when there is plenty out there that is still perfectly usable (and relatively attractive) that can be had for less.  My only exception to this is our mattress.  There is nothing more important than the right mattress.  But that's not really what this post is about.  It's about the ugly, but nice feather pillows we got for free, with our sofa (also for free).

We got our sofa from craigslist from a student moving away.  It was free because it had a few minor cat scratches on the ends' upholstery.  This didn't bother us much because we have cats that have since added to the destruction.  The sofa did come with fluffy feather pillows, which was nice.  But as you can see below, they're pretty ugly.

My temporary fix, which has lasted probably a year now, was to cover them with old pillow slips we had leftover from our wedding.  Although I like these slips, they're too small for the pillows and just look awkward.

This week at Marshall's I saw the below chevron/ikat pillow and fell in love.  I love the colors and it's made in the USA.  I had to have it.  Once I bought it though, I realized it was time to finally make pillow slips for the ugly pillows.  Off to JoAnns we went and found absolutely gorgeous Waverly fabric in the home fabric section.  Gorgeous, $35/yard fabric.  Not in my budget!  But, as fate would have it, the fabric was 40% off and we had a coupon for an additional 10%.  I shopped around for about 20 minutes, trying to find a more affordable fabric, but in the end bought the lovely Waverly fabric.

Here are our new pillow slips!  The chevron one is the purchased pillow from Marshall's.  The other two are the Waverly covered pillows.  I absolutely love them.  In fact, I keep looking at them on the sofa, so proud of them!

Update 24DEC13:  How strange is this!?!  I just found pillows in the fabric above for sale now on Target!  A year after I made them!  I'm sort of flattered that I made something that was so darn cute that a store started carrying the same item!
